What is Magnetic Disk? Advantages and Disadvantages of Magnetic Disk
Hello friends, in today’s article we are going to talk about Magnetic disk.
Today we will learn in detail about, what is a magnetic disk. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Magnetic Disk?
So without wasting time let’s first understand what is Magnetic Disk.
What is Magnetic Disk
Magnetic disk is a non-volatile storage device in which we can store data for a long time. Magnetic disk is a very popular storage media used as a secondary storage device in computers.
Magnetic disks consist of circular platters that look like CDs. The diameter of each platter ranges from 1.8 to 5.25 inches and the surface of each platter is divided into circular tracks which are further divided into sectors.
The upper and lower surfaces of the platter are covered with magnetic material so that we can store information on both sides of the platter.
Magnetic disk consists of many platters which are arranged on top of each other and each platters has a read-write head that keeps rotating in those platters. These read-write heads that run across the surface of each platter are attached to the disc arm.
Magnetic disks are usually made of plastic such as ferromagnetic material.
The way data is stored in a magnetic tape, in the same way, data is stored in a magnetic disk. The main part of the magnetic disk is the head, which does the work of reading/writing data.
Magnetic disk is an inexpensive secondary storage device whose storage capacity can range from several hundred GB to terabytes.
The data stored in the magnetic disk can be updated when required.
Data is accessed randomly in a magnetic disk, which greatly reduces the data access time.
It is much cheaper than RAM and a lot of data can be stored in it. But its speed works with RAM because its size is more, then the data access time becomes slightly more than RAM.
Advantages of Magnetic Disk
- This is a reliable secondary storage device.
- In this, data is accessed randomly. Due to which its data access time is reduced.
- Data transfer is greater than magnetic tape.
- It is used as secondary memory in computers.
- In this, the data can be updated when required.
- Its storage capacity is very high.
- It is a non-volatile storage device in which the stored data remains intact even after the power supply is turned off.
Disadvantages of Magnetic Disk
- It costs more than magnetic tape.
- It is less portable than magnetic tape.
- There is a risk of data loss in the event of a head crash.
